Hey everybody,You may want to read an article with a lot of information on Harry Potter on ChristianityToday.com. ******* (e-11/22/2002 10:43:22AM) The comments in support of this series that God is against are very weak and hardly persuasive. The entire article is curiously absent of Scripture. Deuteronomy 18:10 NKJV "There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer," 1 Samuel 15:23 NKJV "For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you ... " 2 Kings 21:6 NKJV "Also he made his son pass through the fire, practiced soothsaying, used witchcraft, and consulted spiritists and mediums. He did much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger."
Okay, with all the controversey going on over "Harry Potter" because it is full of witchcraft-and witchcraft is clearly against the Bible-does that mean we should also screen the other movies we watch..that include murder (againt the 10 commandments), adultry (again the 10 commandments) teens doing drugs and having sex before marriage-these seem to be typical things in movies...so if we are going to ban Harry Potter due to its content, shouldn't we as Christians ban a lot of other movies as well? (e-11/18/2002 1:31:01 PM) So I was reading this book once and it contained the following: homosexual gang rap, murder, war, genocide, adultery, the devil, lies, torture, images of hell, etc....This doesn't sound like a book you should read but, that book is the Bible. God's objections to 'Scruffy Potmaker' do not stem from just containing witchcraft. I appreciate this opportunity to further explain the objections to this subject that have been laid out at previous Spark engagements... The content, context, and message of 'Scruffy Potmaker' are clearly anti-Christ and anti-God. The hero of the story is a warlock, one who practices and values magic. The target audience is children. The message (mixed with things clearly good) is the trivializing of witchcraft and the promotion of witchcraft as fun and exciting. Mixing good with bad is a common tactic of the devil. Rat poison is actually mostly rat food, it's the little bit of poison that is swallowed that causes death. Clearly there are other movies Christ following Christians should avoid. We advocate careful discretion in many areas of entertainment. The Spark does not want to appear to be picking on this one book series turned movie. (It is important to note that the TbT Spark a.d. is employed by the parent company of the business behind the movie series being discussed). However, this series is very popular and disturbingly popular among fellow Christians. When Christians are supportive of such clearly anti-God things, the Spark feels Spirit lead to openly discuss such things. 'Saving Private Ryan' was clearly a violent and horrific movie. However, it was a powerfully accurate fictionalized portrayal of real events and was an important factor in opening the eyes of many to the horrors of war and the bravery of all who fought. Left Behind 1 & 2 both contain murder and even the antichrist but, of course God is not against these movies. So content is not the sole reason God is against certain movies. The message and influence of such movies are the most important factor. The message and influence of 'Scruffy Potmaker' is to make witchcraft innocent and fun, especially to children. Spirit lead discretion in all forms of entertainment we as followers of Christ choose to participate in is always needed and encouraged. IF, Biblical support for this series could be found please bring it to my attention. IF it could be shown God is supportive of this series the Spark would immediately be behind it as well. However, try as you may, one will not find Biblical support for this series and you will find that God is not neutral on this subject. Malachi 3:5 NKJV "And I will come near you for judgment; I will be a swift witness Against sorcerers, Against adulterers, Against perjurers, Against those who exploit wage earners and widows and orphans, And against those who turn away an alien-- Because they do not fear Me," Says the LORD of hosts." Hebrews 4:12 NKJV "For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." 2 Timothy 3:12-17 NKJV 12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution. 13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."
Does the word BIBLE actually mean, "Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth"? thanks (e-11/18/2002 1:28:44 PM) The clever acronym you refer to is not the reason behind the word Bible. "Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth" is a recent creation. The exact source of that phrase is unknown to me. The true etymology of the word Bible and it's usage is as follows: Bible, the English form of the Greek name Biblia, meaning "books," the name which in the fifth century began to be given to the entire collection of sacred books, the "Library of Divine Revelation." The name Bible was adopted by John Wickliffe (1328?-1384), and came gradually into use in our English language. Source: Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary
